Representation, Gaps, Exclusions.
On Diversity Practices in Theaters
The FAIRSTAGE publication “Representation, Gaps, Exclusions: On Diversity Practices in Theaters” summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding diversity practices in theater organizations and aims to highlight progress. Where do we stand right now, and what is already happening? Who is working to combat structural mechanisms of exclusion in theater, and how? Who is represented, and what do we actually know about the gaps?
The articles explore queer realities in the theater, offer insights into efforts to promote diversity and inclusion, and highlight ableist exclusion within the theater industry. Ten theater professionals share their perspectives on representation within theater companies and among audiences in short articles. An initial overview of the available data and facts clearly shows that further action is needed in this area.
In addition, FAIRSTAGE’s new guidance document on leadership selection at Berlin theaters is being published for the first time. The document, which was developed over a period of more than ten months, contains concrete and precise recommendations for structuring the process of identifying individuals or teams to fill artistic director positions or other leadership roles at theaters. One of its key messages is that greater diversity at the leadership level is achievable, but it requires resources and must be consciously set as a goal and planned well in advance.
The FAIRSTAGE pilot project is a joint initiative of Diversity Arts Culture, ensemble-netzwerk, and LAFT Berlin.
